Description

From Pfaffenheim, in the heart of deep Alsace, Jean-François Ginglinger defies rules and labels with conviction. Ginglinger Pinot Gris Steiner is born on the historic Steinert estate, a terroir with chalky soils that holds the title of Grand Cru. But Jean refuses to bottle under this appellation: he does not accept the residual sugar required by the regulations. He is looking for something else. His Pinot Gris is not voluptuous or indulgent, but dry, straight and deep - a raw reflection of the soil in which it was born.

Winemaking

Ginglinger Pinot Gris Steiner' s viticulture is certified organic and clearly influenced by biodynamics: minimal intervention, low yields, manual labour. The grapes are harvested by hand, gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in large old oak vats. Unclarified, unfiltered, with minimal sulphites. Some years, Ginglinger Pinot Gris Steiner spends up to 30 months on fine lees, which gives it an enveloping texture without compromising its natural tension.

Taste

Ginglinger Pinot Gris Steiner moves away from the archetypal sweetness. The nose is restrained and mineral: white grapefruit, lime zest, wet limestone, a touch of green almond. No tropical fruit or perfume. Just hints. On the palate, the wine enters sharp, almost vertical, with an acidity that structures but does not assault. It glides gracefully and finishes with a taut, dry, precise salinity. The fruit is restrained -austerecitrus, pear skin, dried walnut -always wrapped in a chalky layer. The finish is very long, one of those that do not dissolve, but remain, leaving a sensation of almost saline purity.

A biodynamic Pinot Gris for lovers of minerality, closer to a Chablis than to any exuberant white. Thoughtful, serious, with a soul of stone.
