Description
Since 1795, the Bott family has been cultivating vineyards in Alsace, but it was Jean-Christophe Bott who decided to take a decisive step towards the purest expression of terroir. With the conversion to biodynamics in the early 2000s, his vision became even more radical: to let the land speak without filters. On the steep slopes of the Grand Cru Schlossberg near Kientzheim, Riesling finds one of its noblest homes.
Bott-Geyl Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru is born on decomposed granitic sandy soils, with steep slopes and a privileged sun exposure that defines this historic Alsace Grand Cru. Here the vines struggle, deepen and balance, producing small, concentrated clusters. This white wine from Alsace arises from this tension between sun and rock, between ripeness and freshness, always seeking precision rather than exuberance. The biodynamic philosophy reinforces the identity of the vineyard, enhancing the authenticity of the granitic terroir.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard to guarantee maximum quality. The grapes enter the press whole for a delicate extraction. Fermentation takes place slowly in stainless steel tanks, preserving the aromatic purity characteristic of Bott-Geyl Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru. Without unnecessary intervention, the yeasts work naturally.
Subsequently, the wine spends several months on its fine lees, refining texture and complexity without losing its mineral edge. There is no artifice or aromatic make-up; the aim is to preserve the identity of Schlossberg in its most crystalline form. Bottling follows a patient ageing process that respects the wine's rhythm and guarantees its ageing potential.
Taste
In the glass, the Bott-Geyl Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru is precise and luminous. The nose starts off restrained, almost severe, with notes of fresh lime, lemon zest and white grapefruit. Gradually, nuances of white flowers, fine herbs and a marked imprint of crushed stone and wet granite emerge. Nothing exuberant, all measured.
The palate is straight and vibrant. The acidity, sharp but perfectly integrated, crosses the palate like a clean stroke, providing energy and depth. Saline minerality dominates the mid-palate, while citrus fruit supports the structure with impeccable purity. The finish is long, dry and slightly spicy, with an echo of lemon peel and a lingering stony sensation. A serious, elegant and deeply territorial biodynamic Riesling from Alsace.
