Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV Brut Rosé de Maceration (I tasted from Lot 33110213) is based on a shortly macerated Bouzy Pinot Noir from the 2010 vintage. Bottled in June 2011 and disgorged with an extra-brut dosage of three grams per liter in January 2013, this is a round, fruit intense and well structured Rosé Champagne with a mouth-filling, sweet cherry flavor and a long and refreshingly mineral finish. It's excellent to enjoy for itself but also with lighter food dishes.

Features

Description

Benoît Lahaye Rosé de Macération Extra Brut is an elegant and genuine expression of the Bouzy Grand Cru terroir. This wine is made, vintage permitting, from Pinot Noir grapes from the Les Juliennes plot, planted in 1973.

Winemaking

The wine is made using the "rosé de saignée" method, with whole bunches of grapes being macerated for 2 to 3 days, followed by direct pressing. This process results in a base wine that is racked once and not filtered before the second fermentation.
The ageing of Benoît Lahaye Rosé de Macération Extra Brut takes place in amphorae (50%) and in 300-litre oak barrels (50%), with full malolactic fermentation. The wine is then bottled on its own lees for a second fermentation in the bottle with a minimum ageing period of 24 months. Finally, in the expedition phase, the wine is released to the market with a dosage of 2-3 grams of sugar per litre, and is classified as Extra Brut.

Taste

Benoît Lahaye Rosé de Macération Extra Brut, with only 4,000 bottles per year, is a celebration of bright red fruits such as raspberry and cherry, perfectly balanced with a fresh and attractive acidity. On the nose, dense aromas of Asian spices, cinnamon and cardamom can be discerned, intertwined with baked apple, red pear and crisp red currant. On the palate, the wine is taut and gastronomic, with sharp, precise acidity. The finish is long and structured, making this wine an ideal choice for a variety of food and wine pairings.
