Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Disgorged in May 2019 with 3.5 grams per liter dosage, the latest rendition of Lahaye's NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs is based on the 2015 vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of pear, white peach, mirabelle plum and buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and concentrated, with ripe but racy acids, appreciable dry extract and a long, energetic finish.

Features

Description

Benoît Lahaye Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut is an exquisite sparkling wine that is a true reflection of the passion and commitment to natural viticulture in the Champagne region. This wine is made entirely from Pinot Noir sourced from vineyards located in Bouzy and Tauxières. The vineyards, with an average age of 25 years, are located in specific plots such as Les Vaux Betins, Les Hannepes and Les Argentières, where the soil is deep and rich in chalk, providing a distinctive structure, depth and power to the wine.

Winemaking

The making of this champagne begins with a careful selection and pressing of the grapes from each plot separately. Fermentation and ageing are carried out in 205-litre barrels with indigenous yeasts. Afterwards, the wine is bottled with its own lees for a second fermentation in the bottle with a minimum ageing of 24 months. Finally, in the expedition phase, the wine is released to the market with a dosage of 5 grams of sugar per litre, and is classified as Extra Brut.

Taste

Benoît Lahaye Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut stands out for its energetic and persistent flavour profile, with dark fruits accompanied by a stony minerality. Notes of dried fruits, ripe apricot and citrus fruit can be perceived, intertwined with a lingering saline and pleasantly bitter finish. In addition, subtle hints of red berries and baked pear, with toasty and oxidative nuances that enrich its complexity. This champagne is not only delicious from the first sip, but also has great ageing potential, promising to evolve and improve over time.
