Buy Wine from Daterra Viticultores
Laura Lorenzo is undoubtedly one of the most renowned organic winegrowers in the country, thanks to the effort she has invested in her winery Daterra Viticultores, a project that was founded in 2014 by her life partner Álvaro Domínguez.
The vineyards of this winery are located in Manzaneda, Galicia, where she arrived to work as an oenologist at the Dominio do Bibei winery, and where she fell in love with the area, its culture and, above all, the gifts that this land offers her, so much so that she decided to stay and develop her own wines.
Knowing more about Laura Lorenzo
Laura was born in Allariz, Ourense, and from an early age she enrolled in the local oenology school. She then went on to work at Adega Cachín, before emigrating abroad to work at Eben Sadie in South Africa and Achaval Ferrer in Argentina.
Later, as we have already mentioned, she arrived in 2004 in Manzaneda, a region belonging to Ribeira Sacra, to work as an oenologist at Dominio de Bibei, a project in which she remained learning until 2012.
Although at first it was difficult for her to adapt to the sparsely populated and remote area, she soon came to appreciate its potential, which motivated her to create her own winery, Daterra Viticultores, with her life partner in 2014.
Heroic viticulture
Many sources describe the work carried out by Laura Lorenzo and Álvaro Domínguez as a heroic task. And no wonder, since one of the main characteristics of the land where the vines that give life to their project are planted is that they are terraces or steep slopes, with such a degree of inclination that it is practically impossible to use machinery with advanced technology.
Permaculture
Laura and Álvaro carry out the entire process manually and by hand, which gives the wine an added value, as well as the characteristic attributes of organic viticulture that follows the principles of biodynamics. Their work is based on the permaculture system, which takes into account the characteristics of the natural ecosystem while respecting the principles of agricultural, economic, social and political design.
In this way they use and value renewable resources to produce without generating waste, with a respectful approach to the habitat and reducing environmental degradation.
Bodegas Daterra Winemakers
The vines are planted in an area of 4.5 hectares, distributed in about 30 plots between 80 and 120 years old, of different sizes ranging from 400m2 to 2,500 m2. These plots are located in different sectors of the area, some of which they own and others that they usually rent to other people who cannot attend to them.
The winemaking, on the other hand, is carried out in a building located in the centre of Manzaneda, which was specially refurbished for this purpose. In addition, the wines are stored for weeks or months in different types of containers that Laura and Álvaro test in order to obtain the best results.
Such is the case of vats, amphorae and wooden barrels, as well as clay amphorae that were commonly used to preserve food, but not for wine.
Wines with personality
The wines obtained under the viticulture process to which Laura and Álvaro are faithful, are wines that stand out for having great personality, made with grapes of the highest quality, these wines have an Atlantic, pure and mineral profile and denote in their taste and smell; the love, passion and patience with which they have been made.
