In the heart of the Ribera del Duero, in the picturesque village of Fuentelcésped, lies Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos, a place that breathes history and passion for wine.
This region has been linked to vine cultivation and winemaking since time immemorial, long before the designation of origin officially existed. Here, love for the land and respect for the vines has been an economic and cultural driving force that has marked generations. The bodega was founded with the intention of keeping that tradition alive, and today Juan Manuel Burgos, its current owner and winemaker, represents this vision. Juan Manuel grew up among vines under the guidance of his grandfather, who taught him to feel and respect the land. His experience and career have been shaped both in his winery and in the continuous learning that comes from caring for the vineyards and creating wines that faithfully represent the character of the place. Juan Manuel Burgos is a winemaker with an innovative approach and a unique sensibility, which has led his wines to be an authentic expression of his homeland, his commitment and his creativity.
Vineyards
The secret of the wines of Bodegas Juan Manuel Burgos lies in its vineyards and the particular way of working the land. Each vineyard is a reflection of the unique terroir of the Ribera del Duero. The 33 hectares of vineyards are distributed in several locations, including Fuentelcésped, Santa Cruz de la Salceda, Fuentespina and Aranda de Duero, offering a wide variety of soils, from sandy and calcareous to clayey. This diversity of soils makes it possible to obtain wines with exceptional complexity and depth.
In each plantation, a special vine clone is used, coming from pre-phylloxera vineyards, which ensures a perfect adaptation to the climate and conditions of Ribera del Duero. In addition, the use of a low vigour rootstock and the selection of poor and sloping soils favour the development of superior quality grapes, with a planting frame of 3,500 to 4,000 vines per hectare. This meticulous planting effort, together with the daily work of caring for each vine, ensures the quality that characterises the wines of Juan Manuel Burgos.
The younger vineyards, with a high production, are used for young wines such as Avan OAK. However, the real jewel is to be found in the vines planted more than fifty years ago by Juan Manuel's grandfather, which give life to Avan Viñedos Viejos. This dedication to the care of the vineyard and the careful selection according to the age of the vines and the type of soil, is one of the fundamental pillars that gives life to the wines of Bodegas Juan Manuel Burgos.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos revolves around authenticity and respect for the land. For Juan Manuel, each wine is a form of expression, a window into the personality of a specific year and the plot where his grapes were grown. His winemaking process combines traditional and modern techniques, with a focus on quality and meticulous care at every stage.
Grape selection begins in the vineyard, berry by berry, ensuring that only the best clusters reach the winery. The vinification process is simple and natural, where time and nature determine the course of each wine. For the ageing process, only new French oak barrels of extra fine grain are used, which allow for harmonious ageing without detracting from the fruit. It is during the ageing process that Juan Manuel allows his wines to find their own rhythm, without the imposition of the typical times of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin for Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva wines.
Their motto is "One vineyard, one wine". This philosophy gives rise to what they call "vineyard wines": wines that come from a single plot, made in the same way, but with unique characteristics that the soil gives to each one. Within this line, labels such as Valdehernado, born in 2005, fruit of vineyards in sandy soils, or Torrubio (2007), with vines in clay soil, and Los Cantillos (2014), with grapes from calcareous soils, stand out. Each of these wines captures the essence of the soil and the unique identity of its vineyard of origin.
The history of the name AVAN also reflects this philosophy of moving forward without forgetting the origins. In a fortuitous moment, a wine-stained napkin on which Juan Manuel had written "NAVA" took an unexpected turn: the spilled wine altered the letters, transforming them into "AVAN", a symbol of progress and evolution. Avan means progress, a tribute to the patron saint of Fuentelcésped, the Virgin of Nava, and a commitment to innovation and respect for roots.
