Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Tasted just prior to bottling, Piedlong's 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre from the lieu-dit of the same name. Scents of roses, red berries and citrus zest appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and elegant, with a hint of cracked pepper on the lingering finish.

Description
From the Piedlong plateau, the highest point of Châteauneuf du Pape, comes a wine that honours history and embraces precision. The Brunier family, guardians of this terroir, decided to go for the essentials: the strength of the 70-year-old Garnacha Tinta and the depth of the 50-year-old Mourvèdre, grown on stony soils, covered by the classic galets roulés and reddish sands of the lieu-dit Pignan. The combination of altitude, poor soils and dry climate gives rise to a wine that speaks of tension, patience and an identity without artifice. At a time when many opt for immediate wines, the Bruniers decided not to filter or clarify, and to extend the ageing for more than 20 months. The result: a Châteauneuf du Pape that does not seek to impress with power, but to seduce with balance and depth.
Winemaking
The grapes for Piedlong Châteauneuf du Pape are harvested by hand, with a triple selection: in the vineyard, on arrival at the winery and just before fermentation. They are selectively destemmed, gently crushed and fermented in concrete and wooden vats for at least 30 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally, and the wine matures for 20-22 months in large French oak vats (60 hl), without filtration or clarification.
Taste
On the nose, Piedlong Châteauneuf du Pape displays black cherry, wild raspberry and morello cherry, wrapped in notes of dried herbs, black pepper, fine leather and a delicate touch of liquorice. Faint smoke and warm earth also appear, with sweet spice undertones. The palate is full-bodied, with firm tannins and silky texture. The Garnacha adds juiciness and ripe fruit, while the Mourvèdre supports the wine with tension and freshness. The acidity is vibrant, the alcohol warm but perfectly integrated. The finish is persistent, mineral, with hints of hot stone, dried leaf and a slight balsamic bitterness. A serious, deep and elegant wine, which moves away from the noise to speak quietly but with conviction.
