Description
On the rocky plateau of La Crau, south-east of Châteauneuf du Pape, the Brunier family has been cultivating an intimate relationship with the land since 1891, marked by patience, tradition and loyalty to its origins. There, on a blanket of galets roulés - alluvial stones that capture the sun's heat - vines up to 70 years old grow, deeply rooted in a soil of Miocene molasse and red clay, a soil that gives the wine its unmistakable character and depth.
Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge was born as a tribute to the site: its name comes from an old optical telegraph station that once stood on the property, a symbol of vision and faithful transmission. The classic southern Rhône blend -65% Garnacha Tinta, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, with a touch of Cinsault and Clairette- is interpreted here with sobriety, precision and a mineral clarity that defines the house style.
Winemaking
The grapes for Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge are harvested by hand, with a demanding triple selection to ensure only the best from each plot. Vinification takes 30 to 40 days in stainless steel and wood tanks, followed by full malolactic fermentation. Ageing takes place for 20 to 22 months in large 60-hectolitre French oak vats, without fining or filtering before bottling. This artisanal and respectful process allows Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge to evolve nobly: its best vintages can be aged for more than 25 years, developing complexity without losing freshness.
Taste
Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge expresses the southern landscape: aromas of black cherry, ripe plum and wild blackberry intertwine with notes of dried herbs, liquorice, leather and a stony background reminiscent of the heat accumulated in the galets. The palate is ample, dense and balanced, with firm but refined tannins. The natural freshness supports a solid structure, culminating in a long, saline and spicy finish. It is a sober, austere and profound wine, which does not seek to impress with exuberance, but to seduce with authenticity, elegance and absolute fidelity to its terroir.
