I love the perfumed, elegant and nuanced nose of the 2023 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra, as each year it's fascinating to compare it with the Granito bottling. It comes from eight small plots in the schist zone, where they have a total of 10 hectares, but there are no more than 25 or 30 hectares in total in the village, on steep slopes, very stony and hard to work, and they are being abandoned. The eight plots are 50 to 60 years old and have different exposures, so they have a palette of ingredients to make the blend, as each plot ferments and matures separately. This year, the nose of the Pizarra is clearly superior, with more nuance and detail, quite subtle. It was produced in a similar way as the Granito; fermented destemmed, with a soft maceration and aged for one year in used, well-seasoned 400-, 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels. It has a paler color and a more fragile nose with notes of decayed rose petals and herbs and somewhat more evolution, open, expressive and aromatic, a little à la Rayas. It has fine, dusty minerality and very tasty flavors and is elegant, nuanced and with great depth and persistence, long and clean. This year, I give it the edge over the Granite. But that's splitting hairs... 6,578 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.
