Description

In a forgotten corner of the Baix Penedès, where the old vines survive the sea wind and the aridity of the limestone soil, Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa - a couple of Italian architects based in Catalonia - undertook an unusual enterprise: to recover native varieties that are practically extinct, cultivated without haste, without shortcuts, without concessions. Their winery, Partida Creus, is more than a brand, it is a declaration of principles: wines without make-up, with an agricultural soul and a wild accent. Partida Creus Sumoll was one of the great challenges - a tannic, rustic grape, not very grateful in conventional hands - but that is precisely why they chose it. "Difficult things attract us", they say. And the result is a radical, vibrant and raw reinterpretation of this forgotten Catalan variety, now proudly revived.

The vines grow in poor soils, with a loamy texture and chalky base, under the influence of the Mediterranean, which provides thermal amplitude and slow ripening. There is no DO here: freedom is more important than the label, and you can feel it in every sip. This Sumoll does not respond to any canon, and that is why it is so exciting.

Elaboration

At Partida Creus Sumoll the grapes are worked with a minimum of intervention that respects their purest expression. Only 50% of the grapes are destemmed, seeking a balance between the vegetal tension of the stems and the living fruit. After a maceration of just 3 days, light and extractive, the wine ferments with its own yeasts, with no added sulphur, allowing the character of the variety and the environment to impose itself without filters. No wood, no corrections, no make-up. The ageing is done in stainless steel tanks for 8 months, to preserve freshness, and then rests for a further 5 months in the bottle, refining without losing its edge.

Taste

Partida Creus Sumoll opens with an elusive, almost elusive nose, where the red fruit hints rather than shouts: sour cherry, wild redcurrant, a touch of pomegranate and a background of dry leaves, like an autumn afternoon. There is something earthy, dry, as if the dust of the road is still hanging in the air. At first sip, the wine is sharp, taut, with a nervous acidity that runs through it from start to finish, like a rope stretched to its maximum. Light in body but deep in character, it has that rare quality of seeming fragile but striking with precision: fine but present tannin, sharp, almost electric.

The palate is fast, fluid, like a stream that never stops, leaving a trail of crunchy fruit and a slight herbal bitterness that makes it addictive. There is no roundness, no caress. There is edge, freshness, dryness, and a refreshing sensation that begs for another sip. It is not an easy wine, but it is tremendously lively. Like a conversation with someone who is not afraid to speak his mind.
