Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The white 2020 Finca Calvestra was produced with Merseguera grapes planted at 920 meters in altitude and fermented in 225- and 500-liter acacia wood barrels, where it matured with fine lees for 11 months. It has 14% alcohol, a low pH of 3.19 and 6.2 grams of acidity. As I've seen when comparing some 2020s with 2019s, this feels more primary and round, more powerful and a little riper with some balsamic notes and a bitter twist in the finish. 12,650 bottles were filled in November 2021.

Features

Description

The wine Finca Calvestra de Mustiguillo is a very particular white wine, as it is the product of the efforts of this winery to recover all the native varieties of the Mediterranean, including the Merseguera: the white grape with which this wine is made.
The Merseguera grape used to produce this wine is grafted with old Bobal vines, which is why it has a particular flavour and texture, enhancing its freshness with crisp tones.
The vineyard where this fruit is grown has limestone soils and is located at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level. It is also the source of the winery's best white wines, including Finca Calvestra.

Winemaking

After the cultivation of the Merseguera grapes, the grapes are harvested by hand, using 15 kg boxes to guarantee the freshness of the fruit.
Then, the process of selecting the best bunches is carried out, together with destemming and light crushing. Gentle pressing is also applied to select only the free-run juice.
It undergoes a barrel fermentation process, using indigenous yeasts, before being aged for 11 months on its fine lees and bottled unfiltered.

Taste

The Finca Calvestra wine is straw yellow in colour, and in its aroma you can detect notes of white flowers. In the mouth it is unctuous, fresh and with citrus tones, with fruity touches and a long lingering finish.

A creamy and elegant wine

As you take a sip, you will notice its particular volume and creaminess, finishing with a touch of freshness and elegance. It is perfect to accompany appetizers that include seafood, any kind of fish, white meats, pasta, rice dishes and soft or blue cheeses.
