Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with sweet, powdery tannins and a long, spicy finish, this site, an enclave in Vignes Franches that's one of the house's emblematic wines, always performs well.

Features

Description

There are wines that are the liquid memory of a family and its land. Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules, a jewel nestled within the Premier Cru "Les Vignes Franches" in Beaune, is one of those rare cases where history, terroir and vision intertwine. This walled plot was acquired in 1826 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot and has remained in the care of the family ever since, as a living inheritance. Located between Savigny-lès-Beaune and Pommard, the vineyard enjoys clay-limestone soils and a perfect exposure that gives rise to a Pinot Noir of great balance: intensity and elegance in precise proportions. The central and southern parts of the clos provide structure, while the north offers subtlety, creating a wine with multiple layers of expression.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, selecting only the best berries, characterised by their dark skin and concentrated pulp. The bunches of Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules are completely destemmed and fermented in open vats, with a maceration of about four weeks allowing a precise extraction of colour and tannins. After devatting, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels, where it ages for 18 months. Some of the oak is new, always in balance with the pure character of the wine.

Taste

Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules displays a sophisticated fragrance on the nose: ripe black and red fruits - cherry, cassis, pomegranate - intertwined with notes of dried petals, fresh truffle and fine spices such as clove and cinnamon. With air, nuances of damp earth, cocoa and blond tobacco emerge. The palate is full, dense but fluid, with silky tannins supporting a juicy, fresh centre. The finish is long, saline, with a vibrant tension reminiscent of the chalk and limestone of its soil. A serious wine, with a precise structure, that does not need to show off to impress. Perfect for those seeking depth, authenticity and a classic - and timeless - expression of the Côte de Beaune.
