Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 La Atalaya del Camino was produced with a blend of 85% Garnacha Tintorera and 15% Monastrell from 45+-year-old, dry-farmed vines fermented separately in 10,000-liter stainless steel vats and matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. This is very oaky—the oakiest of the reds here—toasty, creamy, spicy and smoky, with a core of very ripe fruit. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.76 and 6.3 grams of acidity and tons of tannins. Will it come into balance with time in the bottle? 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.

Description
La Atalaya del Camino is a red wine produced by Bodegas Atalaya in the D.O. Almansa, a project founded in 2007 that is part of the Juan Gil Bodegas Familiares group. This wine is made mainly with the varieties Garnacha Tintorera ( 85%) and Monastrell (15%), grown in vineyards located between 700 and 1,000 metres above sea level, which gives it an excellent freshness and a good concentration of flavour. The vineyards are planted on sandy soils with a calcareous base, which helps to retain acidity and gives structure to the wines.
Winemaking
In terms of climatic characteristics, the region's continental climate, with rainfall limited to less than 350 mm per year, creates ideal conditions for growing these varieties. The grapes are vinified separately in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to maintain freshness and aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked into French oak barrels for 12 months of ageing. This process allows the wine to develop complexity, rounding out its tannins and providing well-integrated spicy and woody nuances.
Taste
In terms of sensory profile, La Atalaya del Camino has an intense cherry colour with violet tones, reflecting its youth and concentration. On the nose, powerful and complex aromas of ripe red fruits, such as blackberry, accompanied by spicy notes, aromatic herbs and floral hints. On swirling the glass, deeper nuances emerge, such as balsamic and light toasted notes due to the barrel ageing.
On the palate, La Atalaya del Camino is characterised by its solid, fleshy structure, with firm but well-integrated tannins. It has a remarkable balance between power and freshness, making it a rounded wine. Ripe fruit flavours combine with spicy notes and a touch of liquorice, leaving a long, pleasant finish that invites further enjoyment. This wine is ideal for pairing with red meats, cured cheeses and game dishes.
