Description
The story of Ginglinger Gewürztraminer Steiner is a statement of principle. Although the vines grow on the Alsatian plot of Steinert, officially classified as Grand Cru, Jean decided not to adhere to that label. The reason? He rejects the residual sugar required by the appellation, preferring a drier, freer wine, more faithful to the natural expression of the grape and the terroir. It is a gesture of independence that defines both his philosophy and the profile of the wine.
Steinert, located between Pfaffenheim and Westhalten in Alsace, rests on stony limestone soils that give the wine a mineral tension. There, under a climate protected by the Vosges, the vines ripen in sunshine and dry wind, in optimal conditions. The Gewürztraminer is cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics (Jean has been Demeter certified since 2001), with manual, minimally interventionist practices.
Winemaking
The grapes for the Ginglinger Gewürztraminer Steiner are harvested by hand, with a careful selection of clusters. Fermentation is spontaneous, with indigenous yeasts, and ageing takes place in large oak vats. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, and is bottled with a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide, respecting the purity of the fruit and the terroir as much as possible.
Taste
On the nose, Ginglinger Gewürztraminer Steiner displays a complex bouquet: rose petals, lychee, candied orange peel and sweet spices such as clove and ginger. The palate is broad, enveloping, with a ripe but not overripe fruit centre. There is a balance between density and freshness, supported by a fine acidity and a marked chalky minerality. The finish is long, floral and saline.
Ginglinger Gewürztraminer Steiner is neither lush nor cloying: it is a wine with a dry, refined character, far from the archetypal sweetness. Ideal with spicy Asian food, curry dishes or strong cheeses. A delicious and courageous rarity.
