Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2020 Berg Schlossberg offers an intense and earthy bouquet with wet clayish slate and lemony as well as flinty aromas. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a powerful, quite rich and mouth-filling Berg Schlossberg with grippy tannins, fine bitters and a long, intense and salty, very complex finish. More powerful than the 2021 and, in all its generosity and tension, a safe bet for the future. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022.

Features

Description

Georg Breuer Berg Schlossberg wine comes from the Rheingau region, one of the smallest in Germany with about 3000 hectares. The plot is situated on steep south-facing slopes and is protected from the cold north winds by the Taunus Mountains. This white wine of the Riesling variety, with its distinctive aromatic profile, delicate structure and sharp acidity, is the main grape of this wine, renowned not only for producing the finest German wines, but also for its worldwide recognition.

Winemaking

The "Berg Schlossberg" vineyard is located in a bend of the Rhine, with vineyards that are the steepest in the Rheingau, with slopes of up to 65%. The soil, consisting of Rhine slate and Taunus quartzite, acts as a heat store. The winery, under Bernhard Breuer's philosophy of strict quality, has been transformed into one of the Rheingau's leading wineries, now managed by his daughter Theresa Breuer, with the help of cellar master Markus Lundén.

Taste

Georg Breuer Berg Schlossberg is an amalgam of power and finesse. Simultaneously savoury and juicy, this wine stands out for its mineral spiciness. With a delicate aroma of stone fruits and orange peel, this Riesling is characterised by its elegant style and fine tannins. It is long-lasting and has monumental depth. With an intense, grippy and thoroughly dry finish, it reveals citrus notes and hints of crushed slate and quartzite.
