Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Recently, I had the lucky opportunity to taste back vintages of this wine at various dinners and masterclasses, and it blew me away each time. The Gaja family is using this bottle as a banner of sorts to show the aging potential of their white wines in advance of a secretive new project to soon add more whites to the family portfolio. The 2020 Langhe Alteni di Brassica shows tropical tones and sweet peach. It feels large and generous to the palate. Pretty mineral tones, even a hint of white pepper, add focus. The wine is not all nerves; there is creamy richness here. Winemaking sees 85% stainless steel, and a smaller part goes into tonneaux. It rests on the fine lees for 18 months with no malolactic fermentation. You'd do well to give this wine some time in your cellar.

Features

Description

Gaja Langhe Alteni di Brassica is one of Angelo Gaja's great white wines. This wine stands out for its smooth, intense personality and international character, with aromas of exotic fruit and light woody notes, the result of its refinement in barrels. It is considered one of the best expressions of Piedmont.

Winemaking

This white wine is produced exclusively from an internationally renowned varietal, Sauvignon Blanc, which accounts for 100% of the wine's composition. This variety, widely cultivated throughout the world, also finds in Piedmont some areas particularly favourable for its development. Gaja grows this varietal in the Langhe terroir, in vineyards covering approximately 3 hectares with a mainly calcareous clay soil.
After the harvest, the grapes are vinified and left to mature in oak for six to eight months. Once this maturation is complete, the wine is ready to be bottled and marketed.

Taste

Alteni di Brassica has well-defined fruity notes of grapefruit, papaya and pear, complemented by floral and spicy hints. On the palate, it offers a balanced body and a refined structure, backed by great freshness. It is a wine that confirms all the great quality of Gaja, capable of surprising the palate not only with sublime red wines, but also with a white wine of the highest level.
