Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Frank Cornelissen 2020 Etna Rosso Contrada Zottorinotto Chiusa Spagnolo CS might need a bit more time in bottle to flesh out. At this point, it shows dark cherry fruit and cola, and there is a hint of trapped CO2. It offers a lean mouthfeel but not without power, followed by dark concentration and ferrous notes of rusty nail and beetroot.

Features

Description

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Chiusa Spagnolo, contrada Zottorinoto - Chiusa Spagnolo, is a wine that comes from the Nerello Mascalese variety. This variety is grown in a non-grafted vineyard in the Zottorinoto area, specifically in the Chiusa Spagnolo section. This vineyard, located towards the bottom of the valley and somewhat hidden in an amphitheatre surrounded by lava, is unique and was planted around 1925 at a lower altitude of 620 metres above sea level. The result is a deep and tannic wine, a bit more withdrawn and similar to Nebbiolo compared to other wines from the area.

Winemaking

Vinification begins with destemming and light crushing of the grapes. Fermentation begins with a foot of vat in which indigenous yeasts are used. The must ferments spontaneously, with 50 days of skin maceration. Ageing takes place in neutral epoxy tanks ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 litres for 18 months, followed by a further 18 months in the bottle. No fining is carried out and filtering is done before bottling with 5 micron PP cartridges. Sulphur values can vary from 15 to 50 mg/l, added or not, depending on the quality of the grapes and the stability of the wine. The annual production is approximately 3,000 bottles and its first vintage was in 2012. It can be found under the denomination Etna Rosso DOP or IGP Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalese.

Taste

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Chiusa Spagnolo presents a medium intensity garnet colour that immediately catches the eye. On the nose, aromas of tart red cherry, hawthorn, violet and liquorice unfold, creating an intriguing and fresh olfactory palette. On the palate, the entry is dominated by tart red cherry, accompanied by a medium-intensity upright body and juicy, medium-high acidity. Tannins, powdery in texture and of medium intensity, complement the experience, leading to a saline finish that lingers on the palate. This wine reflects the essence of natural winemaking, but offers remarkable purity on the nose.
