Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Munjebel Rosso VA is otherwise known as the Cuvée Le Vigna Alte and represents a blend of fruit from various high-altitude sites on the volcano. These high-altitude sites do indeed produce some of the most interesting fruit, especially in a warm vintage like 2017. You get the heat of the sunshine near the top parts of the volcano, and you get the stronger quality of light up there. But you also get steep diurnal shifts between day and nighttime temperatures. These factors contribute to sharp and focused aromas with pinpoint accents of wild cherry, rose and crushed volcanic stone. Frank Cornelissen has done a great job here.

Features

Description

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso VA Vigne Alte (MunJebel Rosso VA, Vigne Alte plot is a pure expression of Nerello Mascalese, a grape variety indigenous to Sicily. This wine is a blend of Frank Cornelissen's three highest 90 year old vines known as Vigne Alte: Tartaraci, Rampante soprana and Barbabecchi. These vineyards are located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, in the Etna region, in the northern valley. The specific locations of these vineyards are Bronte (Tartaraci) and Solicchiata (Barbabecchi and Rampante soprana). The altitudes of these vineyards are impressive: Tartaraci is at 1000 metres above sea level, Barbabecchi at 910 metres and Rampante soprana at 870 metres.
The vinification of this wine begins with the destemming and crushing of the grapes. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and in contact with the skins for about 60 days takes place in 1,500 and 2,500 litre neutral epoxy tanks. The wine is then transferred to other tanks of the same characteristics where the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for the next 18 months, followed by a further 18 months in the bottle. No fining is carried out and the wine is lightly filtered. Sulphur values can vary between 15 and 50 mg/l, depending on the quality of the grapes and the stability of the wine.

Taste

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso VA Vigne has a very precise and perfumed aroma, with a strong purple florality and a core of red and black berries. Raspberry, blackberry and red cherry stand out. It is a taut, mineral-laden wine, with a dark smoky touch. Surprisingly, it has no trace of funky wine or any natural characteristics, proving to be very well crafted and balanced.
