Description

Formigo Blanco is the most authentic expression of Manuel Formigo ’s project in the Ribeiro Designation of Origin, a wine born of a conscious return to the family’s roots in the Avia Valley. The winery has committed to working exclusively with its own vineyards, championing the value of the landscape, old vines and meticulous viticulture. This white wine blends Palomino, Treixadura, Godello, Torrontés, Loureira, Albilla, Caiño Blanco and Albariño, sourced from vines around 35 years old planted on granitic ‘sábrego’ soils – a poor, mineral-rich base that profoundly shapes the wine’s character. In this historic region of Galicia, the inland Atlantic climate and the winemaking tradition of Ribeiro give rise to white wines with precise freshness, a mineral profile and a strong identity.

Production

The Formigo Blanco grapes are harvested by hand and transported to the winery within a few minutes to preserve the grapes’ full purity. Following gentle crushing, the must is extracted using a low-pressure pneumatic press. Formigo Blanco is made from pressed must from selected plots and a small proportion of Palomino from our own smallholdings, fermented in stainless steel tanks with a philosophy of minimal intervention. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation, which helps to preserve all its tension and vibrancy. The result is a dry, crisp and precise Galician white wine.

Flavour

On the nose, Formigo Blanco reveals fresh white fruit, hints of apple, pear, lemon and lime, alongside delicate notes of white flowers, fine herbs and damp stone. On the palate, it is agile, with a vibrant acidity that runs across the palate from start to finish. Its texture is light but not thin, with a clean, juicy and highly expressive mouthfeel. Hints of citrus, white peach, a herbal nuance and a distinct mineral and salty sensation emerge. The finish is dry, fresh and persistent, leaving an impression of purity, energy and authenticity that is so characteristic of the great Ribeiro whites.
