Description
Domaine de Marcoux sees Châteauneuf du Pape not as a prestigious name, but as a living landscape that should speak for itself, without embellishment. The Armenier family has been closely linked to this place for centuries, and since 1995 Sophie and Catherine Armenier have given the estate an identity of remarkable purity. Their conviction was bold and early: they have been farming organically since 1991, long before it became fashionable. Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape is crafted from 13 distinct plots, brought together not to standardise, but to blend the many voices of the terroir. The blend is typically dominated by Garnacha, accompanied by Mourvèdre, Syrah and a small percentage of Cinsault. In Châteauneuf du Pape, with its pebbles, clays, red sandstones and limestones, this blend finds an ideal setting to impart depth, spice and an unmistakable earthy minerality.
Winemaking
The winemaking process at Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape aims to intervene as little as possible so that the vintage retains its true character. Hand-harvesting is key, with selection in the vineyard and transport in crates to preserve the fruit. In the winery, the grapes are sorted again, destemmed, crushed and cooled before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Throughout this process, temperatures are carefully monitored and daily pumping-over is carried out, whilst maceration lasts between four and five weeks to extract texture, structure and complexity without Dureza. Ageing lasts around 18 months and takes place mainly in concrete tanks, large oak vats and a few 350-litre barrels. The aim is not to leave a trace of oak, but to bring the wine into balance and leave the voice of the soil intact.
Taste
In the glass, Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape does not burst onto the scene with a bang; it unfolds calmly and with nobility. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, delicate blackberry and plum emerge, enveloped in garrigue, white pepper, liquorice and a stony, almost smoky note. On the palate, it is full-bodied, silky and deep, yet never heavy. The Garnacha brings juiciness, whilst the Mourvèdre and Syrah contribute depth, spice and structure. The tannins are fine, the acidity is refreshing, and the finish reveals Mediterranean herbs, ripe fruit and a beautifully lingering minerality.
