Description
Domaine de Marcoux sees wine as an extension of the land and of family heritage. The Armenier family has had ties to the southern Rhône for generations, but it was a particularly bold decision that shaped the estate’s current character: in 1991, they committed to certified organic viticulture, long before it became a trend, convinced that only a vineyard tended with respect could express its true character. Domaine de Marcoux Côtes du Rhône originates in Orange, in the Maucoil and Bois Lauzon areas, on alluvial and clay soils, under a dry, sunny Mediterranean climate buffeted by the Mistral. The blend of Garnacha, Syrah and Mourvèdre perfectly encapsulates this landscape: sunshine, dried herbs, ripe fruit and an earthy, frank foundation.
Winemaking
The grapes for Domaine de Marcoux Côtes du Rhône are hand-harvested into crates, with rigorous selection to preserve the purity of the fruit. In the winery, the grapes are destemmed and crushed before fermenting with indigenous yeasts, without any added aromas or oenological artifices. During fermentation, daily pumping-over is carried out to extract colour, depth and structure without hardening the wine. Ageing in concrete tanks takes place for around 10 months, a choice that fits perfectly with Marcoux’s philosophy: to preserve the fruit’s vitality, the freshness and the transparency of the terroir without any interference from oak. The wine is bottled with a focus on balance, vigour and a direct expression of the Southern Rhône.
Taste
In the glass,Domaine de Marcoux Côtes du Rhône reveals an open yet by no means exuberant nose, where black cherry, plum and ripe strawberry mingle with pepper, scrubland, thyme and a slight earthy undertone. It is neither a heavy nor an overly warm red; it possesses that Mediterranean breadth, yet also an unexpected freshness that brings everything together. Garnacha contributes juiciness and volume, Syrah adds spice and tension, and Mourvèdre lends a darker, slightly wild character. On the palate, it is silky, expansive and full-bodied at first, but soon becomes drier, spicier and stony, with a long, flavourful and very authentic finish.
