Description

Ca n'Estruc was founded at the foot of Montserrat, on an estate first recorded in 1574, now owned by the Martí family, who in the 1980s took a difficult decision: to move away from traditional farming methods and embrace a more precise approach to viticulture, one that is more in harmony with the landscape and less interventionist. That courage continues to beat in Ca n'Estruc L'Equilibrista Blanc, a white wine fermented and aged in oak barrels, made from 100% Xarel.lo from controlled vineyards in Esparreguera, at an altitude of 165 metres, cultivated organically and biodynamically on alluvial, clay-limestone and gravelly soils. The estate was also the first winery registered in the D.O. Catalunya, a detail that fits with the house’s pioneering spirit: a long tradition, yes, but with a drive to move forward.

Production

Ca n'Estruc L'Equilibrista Blanc is harvested by hand, with the grapes selected in the vineyard. The whole fruit was brought in, destemmed and gently pressed; the must then settled for 24 hours at 15°C through static settling. Fermentation was initiated using the winery’s own yeasts, prepared from a sample taken from a vat on the same estate in Cuba—a gesture that underscores the desire to speak from the land rather than from a recipe. The fermentation of Ca N’Estruc L'Equilibrista Blanc began in stainless steel tanks ranging from 25 to 100 hl at 15–17 °C and finished in 25-hl French oak foudres, where the wine is aged for 6 months before bottling.

Taste

In the glass, Ca n'Estruc L'Equilibrista Blanc does not aim to be exuberant; it aims to be precise. First come dried lemon peel, stone fruit and a barely bitten yellow apple. Then come fennel, almond blossom, toasted bread, hazelnut and a hint of white pepper. The palate is full-bodied, unctuous and silky, yet not heavy: a citrus freshness stretches it, brings it into order and gives it that vertical dimension that justifies its name. There is body, yes, but also backbone; there is oak, but transformed into texture, not mere embellishment. The finish unfolds with a fine, persistent, very harmonious salinity, leaving an impression of a sophisticated, understated and Mediterranean white wine, with clear ageing potential.
