Description
In the northernmost vineyards of the O Rosal Valley, where the Atlantic lashes with its salty breeze and the granite imposes itself as the backbone of the landscape, a white rarity is born: Terras Gauda La Mar. This wine is the result of an audacious vision of the Terras Gauda winery: to give prominence back to an almost extinct variety, the Caiño Blanco, and to do so from a singular plot where altitude, freshness and morning mists mark the pulse of each cluster.
The history of this wine is also the story of a bet against the tide. In a region where Albariño and the comfort of the familiar reign supreme, Terras Gauda opted for difficulty: Caiño Blanco is a thick-skinned, late-ripening, low-yielding variety. But its reward is unique: tension, complexity and an uncompromising Atlantic character. The winery has accompanied it with a subtle touch of Albariño (2%) and Loureiro, without stealing the limelight, just to refine its expression.
Winemaking
The elaboration of Terras Gauda La Mar is a precise choreography. The grapes are harvested by hand and, once in the winery, the Caiño is cold macerated for a longer period of time, taking advantage of its high skin content, which favours the extraction of its subtle varietal aromas. It is then fermented at low temperature in stainless steel tanks. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine is kept in contact with its lees for just over two months, developing volume and complexity. It then rests in low temperature tanks for at least six months, where it is slowly refined before being bottled to complete its evolution in the bottle.
Taste
Terras Gauda La Mar does not present itself with sweetness or ease. Its first impact is a statement of intent: aromas of ripe melon, peach and austere citrus, followed by a deep range of aromatic herbs, fennel and saline notes. The nose is reminiscent of a broken rock washed by the sea. The wine shows muscle, juiciness and structure. Its vibrant minerality, its trace of salinity and precise acidity, and a long finish reminiscent of Atlantic freshness make it an almost tactile sensory experience. It has volume, but also an internal tension that pushes it towards Altura gastronomy: noble fish, seafood or Asian-inspired dishes find in it a challenging but profoundly harmonious companion.
Terras Gauda La Mar is not just another white wine. It is a statement. Of origin, identity and style.
