Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2020 Salanques was produced with 65% Garnacha, 25% Cariñena and 10% Syrah. It showed generous oak (it spent 12 to 14 months in barrel) and plenty of tannins on the palate, and despite having less alcohol than the 2019 I tasted next to it, it felt riper. 2020 was a challenging year of rain, heat and fungus, and tasted next to the 2021, the 2021 showed better balance. It's ripe at 14.5% alcohol. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.

Features

Description

Salanques is a red wine made from Grenache (65%), Carignan (25%) and Syrah (10%) by the Más Doix winery located in the town of Poboleda (Tarragona) in the northeast of Priorat, under the Priorat DO.
The Garnacha grapes come from vineyards with an average age of 80 years, and the Cariñena grape is centenary, being Sarah the youngest.
These grapes come from vineyards planted on slate soils between 350 and 500 m above sea level, which are characteristic of the area.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand and collected in small 10 kg boxes. On arrival at the winery, the grapes pass through a double sorting table. Subsequently, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, keeping the grapes whole during fermentation.
After vinification, the wine is aged for 14 months in fine grain French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% second use. The wine is neither clarified nor filtered, and rests for several months in the bottle.

Taste

Salanques stands out for its intense, fruity and spicy aromas. It is an expressive, fresh and intense wine. A medium-bodied wine with fresh acidity, polished tannins and a long, balsamic finish - a delight!

An intense and pure wine

Salanques combines grapes from old vines with younger vines with long macerations. It is a wine that conveys the authentic character of Priorat.
Salanques is named after the vineyards that families used to set aside to make wine for their own consumption in the area.
This wine can be enjoyed with wild rice with mushrooms, roast pork with nuts and ginger, roast beef with bacon jam, grilled lamb, feathered game, small game, stews and casseroles.
