Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Offering up aromas of yellow orchard fruit, honeycomb, warm brioche and fresh pastry, the latest release of Pol Roger's NV Demi Sec Rich is full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with lively acids, good concentration and plenty of incipient complexity. To my palate, the real interest will come after five or six years in the cellar, but this is a very well-made example of its genre.

Features

Description

Pol Roger, one of Champagne's most discreet but admired houses, has been cultivating an elegance without fuss since 1849. In 2001, they decided to revive an old Champenoise tradition: a refined, complex demi-sec, capable of seducing lovers of the classic without sacrificing a modern profile. Thus was born the Pol Roger Rich cuvée, conceived not just for desserts, but as a full sensory experience.

Pol Roger Rich is made in equal parts from Pinot Noir (structure), Pinot Meunier (fruit and freshness) and Chardonnay (finesse), sourced from over 30 crus, including the most prestigious Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs. A 25% reserve wine adds additional depth. Richness here is not synonymous with excess, but rather a balance between natural acidity and generous dosage (34 g/l), which rounds out its expression without overpowering it.

Winemaking

Each variety of Pol Roger Rich is vinified separately in stainless steel at a low temperature to preserve its aromatic purity. The must is clarified twice and undergoes a complete malolactic fermentation, softening the texture of the wine. The second fermentation in the bottle takes place in the historic Cava cellars of Épernay, 33 metres underground, where Pol Roger Rich ages for at least four years. Stirring is done by hand, and after disgorging, the wine rests for a further three months before release.

Taste

Pol Roger Rich presents itself with a deep golden colour and coppery reflections, enveloped in fine, constant bubbles. The nose is open and seductive: dried apricots, white flowers, a touch of honey and mild spices. On the palate, the attack is full, round and vibrant. The sweetness is measured, integrated, giving way to notes of pear in syrup, candied orange peel and light caramel. All of this is supported by fresh acidity and a creamy texture. The finish is long, saline and very clean.

Ideal with sweet and savoury dishes, creamy cheeses or fruit tarts, Pol Roger Rich is a generous, hedonistic and perfectly balanced Champagne. A modern nod to a forgotten tradition.
