Oxer Kalamity 2024

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red 2024 Kalamity was produced in 2014 from a field blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura and Garnacha Blanca from very old vines in Elvillar, Laguardia and Camprovín harvested relatively early to avoid excess alcohol and to keep the acidity. The grapes were partly destemmed, partly crushed and partly fermented with full clusters in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and had two to three weeks of maceration. It matured in 600-liter oak barrels for 10 months. It has contained ripeness, 13.5%, and a balanced pH of 3.5. There is subtleness and elegance here, with lots of complexity, and it's perfumed, elegant and harmonious. There are flowers, wild herbs and some spiciness, but it's all very harmonious. I think harmony is the word for this vintage. There are abundant fine-grained, silky tannins, and there is fine acidity. This should age for a very long time, as there is great balance and harmony between all its components. 3,200 bottles were filled in September 2025.

Description
Kalamity is a top-of-the-range wine made by Oxer Bastegieta at his winery in Elvillar, in La Rioja Alta. It is currently one of the highest rated wines on the Robert Parker scale, with consecutive ratings of over 95 points, a synonym for quality and good taste!
The vineyards in which the different varieties of Vitis vinifera are harvested are located at an altitude of more than 600 metres above sea level and their soils are characterised by clayey, ferrous nuances. For this reason they are ideal for the grapes to develop all their organoleptic properties.
Winemaking
This wine is made from the fruit of three different grape varieties: tempranillo, garnacha and viura, which are processed to obtain the must. During the fermentation process, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, concrete eggs and amphorae for one year.
The grapes used in the winemaking process come from clay soils with a high iron content, which favours the development of tannins. Undoubtedly the ideal combination for a delicious wine.
Taste
Kalamity's composition makes it a wine of great complexity. On the nose, its notes are of violets with floral nuances while, on the palate, its flavour is sweet and spicy with balanced acidity.
A red worthy of a king
Both the label and the name of this wine are a direct reference to the English playwright William Shakespeare, in the play The Reign of King Edward II. The Wine Advocate magazine, by the famous oenologist Robert Parker, has awarded it a rating of over 90 points for its meticulous winemaking and delicate flavour - a marvel!
It is perfect to pair with game dishes, stews and strong-flavoured sausages!
