The 2016 Charme Clarete is mostly Rabigato in a field blend coming in at 12.4% alcohol. Unusual in demeanor, this is a sort of orange wine that had skin contact for three days. It was kept in neutral barrels on the lees for three years. Refined and textured, this has velvet on the palate and then finishes with some power and grip. Dry, relatively neutral in flavor, very fresh and a little tannic, this is very serious in style. It is a food wine, not a porch-sipper. Niepoort says that, given the vinification process, this might last forever, but let's start here.

Description
Niepoort Charme Clarete is a rosé wine vinified in claret form in the Douro Valley with mainly the Rabigato variety. In the old vineyards of Vale Mendiz, between 70 and 100 years old, schist soils predominate.
Winemaking
In the early stages of the harvest, small batches of wine were made to produce the Charme claret wine, using 100% whole clusters that were trodden by foot in traditional stone vats. After a short period of maceration, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation was completed in French oak barrels. After that, the wine was aged for 15 months in the same barrels before its bottling.
Taste
This wine is very expressive on the nose, offering incredible freshness and intensity. Despite its somewhat "hard" and austere character, the wine is full-bodied and generous in aroma, showing balance and vivacity. A good tannic structure gives it additional grip, making it a big wine with tremendous ageing potential.
