Description
Montenovo is the most honest and direct expression of Altura Godello. Born in Valdeorras, among the highest mountains in Galicia, this wine reflects the mineral pulse of the blue slate soils and the extreme freshness that only altitude can give. Valdesil, a family winery with a long winemaking tradition, opted for an essentialist vision with Montenovo : to let the land, and not the technique, do the talking in the glass.
Montenovo is made from a selection of plots located throughout the valley, all planted on steep slopes with varying orientations. This diversity adds layers of complexity, but it is the soil that dominates: old, fragmented slate provides tension, character and a natural salinity that defines the wine's profile.
Winemaking
The grapes for Montenovo are harvested by hand, respecting each micro-plot, and the grapes are worked with minimal intervention. Once in the winery, they are carefully destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks takes place at a low temperature in order to preserve the purity of the varietal profile of this unique Godello. The wine remains for a few months on its fine lees, without overpumping or aggressive bâtonnage, seeking texture without losing sharpness. Finally, Montenovo is bottled young, to capture all the freshness and mineral vibrancy conferred by its mountain origin and blue slate soils.
Taste
In the glass, Montenovo displays an intense and precise nose: green apple, lemon zest, fresh fennel and a delicate background of white flowers and wet stone. The palate is clean, taut and electrifying. Vibrant acidity guides the palate, with notes of citrus, white peach and a saline, almost Atlantic finish that evokes the slate from which it comes. Light in alcohol but deep in character, this Godello is a mountain white, with nerve, authenticity and sober elegance. A wine for those who seek purity without frills, and minerality without concessions.
