Léon Beyer Gewürztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles 1998
129.83₣ (Exc. VAT bot. 75 cl.) / Switzerland
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Quite precise on the dense and concentrated nose, the 1998 Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles Quintessence displays lovely aromatic pineapple and tobacco aromas, is very sweet (160 grams per liter) and intense, but fresh and well structured by nice tannins and a good acidity, which also carries the full 13% alcohol to a vivacious finish. If you like something similar to Sauternes but with more acidity, this is the wine you should try. According to the technical data sheet, it was picked in a family-owned Pfersigberg vineyard and the grapes were affected at 80% by noble rot, which correspondents with exceptional 24.5% potential alcohol. It was fermented in a centennial-old cask and Beyer calls it 'the best SGN we have ever bottled.'
