Description
In Montgueux, a small, little-known enclave in southern Champagne, Emmanuel Lassaigne took the reins of his father's legacy with a decidedly bold vision: to restore to the village the respect that its chalky soils deserved. Here, on a hill of pure chalk, he cultivates his vines with an almost obsessive meticulousness. Jacques Lassaigne Rosé d'Emmanuel was born not out of whim or fashion, but as a visceral experiment, a declaration of intent. In a region dominated by Chardonnay, Emmanuel decided to incorporate Pinot Noir - sourced from selected plots in the Côte des Bar - to create a Champagne rosé that does not seek to please, but to excite. There are no compromises here: sustainable viticulturein Champagne, low yields, hand-harvesting and a deep listening to each plot. "Do less to do better", he says.
Winemaking
Jacques Lassaigne Rosé d'Emmanuel is made according to the principles of minimum intervention but maximum precision. The base is Chardonnay from Montgueux, vinified in steel and in small old foudres, with spontaneous fermentation and no added yeasts. The Pinot Noir touch is integrated through a blend of red still wine, adding colour and tension. The wine undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle, with long ageing on the lees for more than 24 months, with no final dosage or a barely perceptible touch, depending on the disgorgement. Each disgorgement is carried out by hand, without freezing the neck of the bottle, an artisanal gesture that honours the purest tradition of Champagne d'auteur.
Taste
From the glass, Jacques Lassaigne Rosé d'Emmanuel makes a silent, almost meditative first impression: it is not a wine of immediate exuberance, but one of layers that are gradually revealed. The colour is a faint salmon pink, with coppery reflections, almost melancholic. The nose opens with pink grapefruit zest, wet chalk and wild raspberries, but soon there is a saline echo of cold air and living earth. On the palate, the wine is straight, dry, almost vertical, but with a tactile weight that recalls the depth of Montgueux. Tart red fruits, rhubarb, a touch of dried hibiscus, and in the background, a mineral vibration that anchors itself on the palate like a stone whisper. The finish is long, tense, saline, like a slowly receding wave leaving traces in the sand.
