Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
During my visit to the Gaja winery, I had the opportunity to preview a few upcoming wines. One of these is the 2022 Barbaresco. This hot vintage required extra work in the vineyard to maintain leaves for shade. The 2022 vintage also saw a tiny 10% whole-cluster fruit, which continues an experimentation started in 2021 (however not realized in the 2023 vintage, which was more challenging in terms of fruit selection). Work with whole cluster adds impressions of freshness, says Giovanni Gaja, and reduced some of the impact of the alcohol. Nonetheless, this vintage was down 10% to 15% in terms of yields, with smaller, hard berries. This is an amply concentrated wine with lovely dimension, richness and tannins that lean on the sweet side.

Description
The red wine Gaja Barbaresco is a faithful expression of the Nebbiolo variety, a grape that is particularly affected by the slight differences in the various types of soil. This wine is the result of blending grapes from 14 different vineyards, which brings out the characteristics of the different terroirs, thus creating a complex and balanced wine. Its bouquet exudes aromas of soft fruits, flowers, delicate spices and mineral notes. It has a dense but elegant structure and a lingering finish with refined tannins. Each bottle of Gaja Barbaresco is a faithful expression of the year of production and is suitable for long ageing in bottle.
The vineyards from which this wine originates are located in the municipality of Barbaresco. The land, at an altitude between 250 and 330 metres above sea level, covers an area of 21.4 hectares and the plants have an average age of 40 years.
Winemaking
The grapes, which come from each individual vineyard, undergo separate fermentation, maceration and ageing in oak for 12 months. They are then blended and aged in oak for a further 12 months.
Taste
Gaja Barbaresco stands out for its bouquet of soft fruits, flowers, delicate spices and mineral notes. Its structure is dense, yet elegant, and its finish is persistent with refined tannins.
It is a wine that pairs perfectly with roasted or grilled red meats, pizzas, pastas, soft creamy cheeses and strong mature cheeses. It also pairs well with game meats such as wild duck or pheasant.
