Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

I tasted two vintages of the Gran Reserva from Haro, starting with the 2017 Imperial Gran Reserva from a warm and dry year whose yields were lowered by frost in late April and was saved by rains at the end of July. It's 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.65 and 5.31 grams of acidity. It fermented in small oak vats followed by malolactic in concrete and aging in French (70%) and American oak barrels for two years, during which time the wine was racked every eight months. It's evolving at a slightly faster pace and maybe it's a little lighter, but I didn't feel the heat, which is quite something. It's drinking well. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020.

Features

Description

Imperial Gran Reserva is one of the extraordinary wines of the CVNE group. It has been elaborated with Graciano 10%, Mazuelo 5% and Tempranillo 85%. These grapes are selected from the best CVNE vineyards in the heart of La Rioja Alta.
It is perfect as an accompaniment to red meats, stews, cured cheeses or fatty fish.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand and selected on arrival at the winery. During the first 24 hours it rests in a cold room to enhance the extraction of aromas and colour.
Vinification is carried out in the traditional way in French oak vats, extending the macerations until the desired colour and structure are achieved. Malolactic fermentation and ageing is carried out in French and American oak vats. The wine is aged for 24 months in new barrels and for a further 36 months in the bottle in the winery's century-old cellars.

Taste

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is a wine with a high aromatic intensity, the result of its time in oak barrels. It is velvety on the palate, marked by a pleasant tannin, showing the distinction of a long and fruity wine.

An intense, fruity, fine, elegant and balanced wine...

This exceptional wine comes from one of the most representative centenary wineries of Spanish wines in general and Rioja wines in particular.
Imperial Gran Reserva is the perfect model of the evolution towards modernity of Rioja red wines. It is fine, elegant, shows great barrel work and has a wide aromatic range, structure and smoothness that make it the "greatest wine of Spain". It is only made when exceptional vintages are produced. It is an extraordinary wine for special occasions.
