Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Pape Clément evokes aromas of dark wild berries, spices, licorice and mulberries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, round and ample palate with structuring tannins and a firm, concentrated mid-palate that segues into a long, fruity finish. Less oaky than the previous years, this is a more contemporary expression of this great terroir. It's a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Description
Château Pape Clément is one of those names that explain why Pessac Léognan occupies a unique place within Bordeaux. Its history, rooted in centuries of tradition and an extremely meticulous modern vision, stems from a very clear idea: to produce a French red wine that does not mask its origins, but rather expresses, with all its nobility, the depth of the Graves gravel soils. Here, the soils of gravel, clay, sand and limestone, combined with a moderate Atlantic climate, give rise to a wine of serious, refined and deeply earthy character. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc reinforces this classic identity, where structure, silkiness and freshness coexist naturally.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Château Pape Clément Rouge is characterised by an almost artisanal precision. Selection begins in the vineyard and continues in the cellar with manual destemming, berry by berry, and a second sorting table. The grapes flow by gravity into wooden vats ranging from 30 to 70 hectolitres, where cold pre-fermentation maceration takes place at 8 °C. Punching down is carried out by hand, and maceration lasts between 30 and 40 days to extract depth, texture and aromatic definition. After devatting, the wine flows by gravity into French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine is aged for 18 months in barrels, refining it without compromising its identity.
Taste
On the palate, Château Pape Clément displays all the class of a great Bordeaux wine. The nose combines ripe black fruit, cassis and plum with notes of tobacco, fine leather, cedar, sweet spices and a delicate smoky undertone. The attack is silky, full-bodied and enveloping, yet always composed. The tannins are fine, dense and polished, supporting a deep body that never becomes heavy. There is elegance rather than excess, harmony rather than raw power. The finish is long, refined and persistent, with hints of warm gravel, noble toasty notes and a smoky profile that marks its origin with absolute distinction.
