Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Angélus has turned out very well in bottle, confirming the expectations formed at the en primeur stage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark wild berries, flowers and spices, subtly framed by toast, it is medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and ample, built around a lively core of fruit and framed by powdery, sweet tannins, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. The harvest took place between September 14 and October 2.

Description
Château Angélus stems from a family vision forged over eight generations in Saint Émilion. At this historic estate, the de Boüard de Laforest family has always understood that a great wine does not impose itself on the landscape, but rather reveals itself through it. The idea behind crafting this Bordeaux wine stems precisely from this meticulous understanding of the terroir: a south-facing slope, shaped like a natural amphitheatre, where heat is concentrated, drainage is excellent and the blend of clay and limestone provides balance, freshness and depth. There, in a bold move that is rare for the region, Angélus gave prominence to Cabernet Franc alongside Merlot – a decisive choice in forging its refined, spicy and long-lived identity. The result is a Saint Émilion Grand Cru with a strong personality, born of a Bordeaux tradition reinterpreted with contemporary precision.
Winemaking
The winemaking at Château Angélus is underpinned by viticulture of the highest standards and a very rigorous selection of the grapes. Each plot is harvested at its exact point of ripeness, seeking to preserve the purity of the fruit and the vineyard’s natural vigour. Once in the cellar, vinification is carried out with precision to respect the character of each grape variety and each soil type. Ageing, a decisive stage in the production of this great Saint Émilion wine, combines the Bordeaux barrel-ageing tradition with a more nuanced approach to oak, even incorporating large foudres for part of the Cabernet Franc, in order to highlight tension, aromatic definition and tactile elegance prior to bottling.
Taste
In the glass, Château Angélus reveals a deep and aristocratic nose: blackberry, black plum and ripe cherry, enveloped in violets, graphite, delicate spices, cocoa and a very characteristic hint of menthol. On the palate, it is full-bodied, silky and firm, with an almost velvety texture that soon tightens thanks to precise acidity and extremely fine-grained tannins. Dark fruit dominates, but liquorice, fine tobacco, cedar and a chalky mineral note soon emerge, lending the wine a lingering finish. It is an elegant red wine, powerful without being excessive, with tremendous length and that rare balance between density, freshness and distinction that defines the great French wines.
