Cantalapiedra Arenisca 2023

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red 2023 Arenisca, now part of the family project, was produced with a majority of Tinta de Toro, the local clone of Tempranillo, and some 5% other red and white varieties from different plots in the villages of Villabuena del Puente and Toro on sandstone soils ('arenisca' is the Spanish word for 'sandstone'). The destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented in open vats for 12 days with indigenous yeasts and no temperature control. The wine matured in 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels for 12 months. Manuel Cantalapiedra likes 2023 better for reds than for whites; after the heat wave they had rain, which slowed things down and made the wines finer-boned. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.65 and 4.95 grams of acidity. Despite the lowish acidity, the wine has freshness and balance. It has the Toro tannins, giving the wine texture and clout. Some 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2026. The wine is sold without appellation of origin.
