Description
Bründlmayer Ried Steinmassl Riesling is a white wine from the Kamptal DAC region, renowned for its Erste Lage ÖTW vineyard.
The vines of the Steinmassl vineyard are trained using the lyre pruning system. A method, in which the vine is bifurcated in such a way that the branches seem to reach the heavens like sun worshippers. This system doubles leaf exposure and promotes aeration, which improves photosynthesis and prevents the dreaded fungal diseases.
Elaboration
The sparse, stony soil provides small berries with concentrated flavour. For Riesling, a significant part of the flavour is stored in the skins of the grapes and is only released by extremely slow pressing for up to 8 hours or by prolonged skin contact overnight. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and maturation is completed with 5-10% of the lees.
Taste
Bründlmayer Ried Steinmassl Riesling stands out for its "surprisingly fresh" freshness with notes of ferns and savoury notes with an underlying lemony fruit. It is very energetic, radically dry and racy for an Austrian wine. It has a very long finish, which can be polarising, but certainly exciting for many. It is a wine that can be enjoyed now or saved for later.
