Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Bollinger's NV Brut Special Cuvée is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier, and the grapes are mostly (more than 85%) sourced in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages. The majority of the Special Cuvée is reserve wines, part of which have been aged in magnums for five to 15 years. The disgorgement I tasted in May 2018 displays an intense golden-citrus color and has a refreshing, concentrated bouquet of citrus fruits, sweet cherries, ripe apples, white flowers, toast, walnuts, ripe apricots and peaches, with just a touch of brioche. On the palate, this is an intense, very elegant and refined cuvée with a very long, refreshing, intense, aromatic and salty finish. This is an excellent Champagne with a beautiful chalky texture in the aftertaste. (Tasted from lot L1711802 in May 2018.)

Description

Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée Brut is the emblematic representation of Bollinger's experience and expertise. Its name, with its English spelling, encapsulates its entire history. It was Georges Bollinger's British agent who, in 1911, christened it "Special Cuvée", as he felt that the expression "non-vintage brut" was inappropriate for a champagne of such subtlety. More than a century later, the name of this champagne still encapsulates its entire history, leaving an impression on labels and minds of what taste buds already knew: that Special Cuvée was indeed very.... special.

Winemaking

This champagne is the expression of a vintage and mostly reserve wines, some of them kept in magnums for 5 to 15 years. The Special Cuvée is composed of more than 85% Grand and Premier Crus of the three main varieties of Champagne: 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier. It is aged in the cellar twice as long as required by the appellation's regulations. Its dosage is moderate, between 7 and 8 grams per litre.

Taste

Special Cuvée stands out for its wonderful aromatic complexity. To the eye, it has the distinctive golden colour of black grape varieties, accompanied by very fine bubbles. On the nose, it offers a beautiful aromatic complexity with aromas of ripe fruits and spices; notes of baked apples, compote and peaches can be perceived. On the palate, there is a subtle combination of structure, length and liveliness; velvet-like bubbles, with aromas of pear, brioche and spice, and hints of fresh walnut. It is perfect for sharing with friends and for those who appreciate the finer things in life. To enhance its unique style, bouquet and aromas, this wine is best drunk between 8 and 10°C. It can be enjoyed immediately or choose to age in your cellar.
