Description
At the top of Zarautz, where the vines seem to seek the breath of the Bay of Biscay, Artadi Izar-Leku - "the place of the stars" in Basque- is born, a project that unites age-old tradition and contemporary vision. Founded in 2015 by the Zapiain and López de Lacalle families, together with the winemaker Inaxio Manterola, Artadi Izar-Leku reinterprets the legacy of Txakoli with a demanding and uncompromising approach. Here, on the most Atlantic fringe of Basque viticulture, Hondarrabi Zuri (90%) and Hondarrabi Beltza (10%) are grown on slate and basalt soils, in vineyards that literally hang over the sea. Despite being located in the Getariako Txakolina area, Artadi Izar-Leku chooses not to join the D.O., reaffirming its stylistic independence.
Winemaking
The history of Artadi Izar-Leku cannot be understood without absolute respect for the cycles of nature and the desire to capture the very essence of the Cantabrian Sea in a bottle. Here, every decision is intentional, almost ritualistic. The day of harvest is awaited as one waits for a favourable tide: with patience, intuition and precision. The Izar-Leku base wine ferments in stainless steel tanks to preserve varietal purity. Then, following the traditional champenoise method, it undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle and rests for 30 months on the lees, without the addition of expedition liqueur (brut nature ). The result: a terroir sparkling wine, without make-up, which accurately conveys its Atlantic origin.
Taste
Artadi Izar-Leku does not impose itself with stridency, but seduces with subtlety. On the nose, notes of lime, cider, green almonds, white flowers and a saline background marked by the sea wind. The bubbles are fine, elegant and perfectly integrated. The palate is vertical, sharp, marked by an electric acidity that lengthens the wine effortlessly. Notes of green apple, grapefruit peel, toast and wet stone appear. Everything is restrained, taut, precise. There are no concessions to sweetness or easy fruit. It is a wine for those who seek emotion in the austere, beauty in the essential. A brutally dry sparkling wine, with an incisive and persistent minerality, ideal for lovers of the purest Champagne or Atlantic whites with nerve. A wine that does not caress: it awakens.
