Description
Anders Frederik Steen does not make wines to conform to a particular style, but to follow the intimate rhythm of the vintage and the terroir. *Flickering Through My Naked Thoughts* stems from this approach to wine: free, patient and deeply rooted in the land. In Valvignères, in the Ardèche, Steen works by listening rather than imposing his will. When the cold arrived early in 2023, he made an unusual but revealing decision: not to press the grapes in a cellar that was too cold, and to wait for spring to restore the right conditions. That patience, bordering on stubbornness, defines the soul of this wine.
‘Flickering Through My Naked Thoughts’ is a red Vin de France made from Garnacha Tintaand Cinsault. The Garnacha comes from the hillside vineyards of Valgrand, on the outskirts of the village, and was destemmed before fermentation. The Cinsault, on the other hand, was added as direct-press must from Le Mazel. Here, the Ardèche reveals its purest identity: a rugged, sunny and stony landscape, with viticulture deeply rooted in rural traditions and a sense of freedom that can be felt in every bottle.
Winemaking
The destemmed Garnacha Tintamacerated in the Cinsault must for over nine months – a duration as unusual as it is decisive for the final character of Flickering Through My Naked Thoughts. The wine was not racked until May 2024, when the temperature in the cellar had returned to a suitable level. After pressing, it was transferred directly to barrels, where it remained for another full year, maturing slowly. It was finally bottled in June 2025. The result is a red wine with an alcohol content of 12.75% vol. that combines visual clarity with a structure that is highly unusual in wines of such a delicate colour.
Taste
In the glass,Flickering Through My Naked Thoughts appears light, almost fragile, but only in appearance. The nose offers fresh red fruit, pomegranate, tart cherry, dried herbs and a subtle, stony, earthy note. On the palate, it reveals more depth than expected: soft yet firm tannins, an enveloping texture and a serene structure reminiscent of a JuraPloussard with a little more body. Delicate, but not light. Airy, yet with depth. A subtle, unusual and tremendously expressive red wine.
