Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Torrontés should not be confused with the Argentinean aromatic Torrontés related to Moscatel, as in reality, it is the same grape as the Albillo Mayor from Ribera del Duero, which existed in Rioja in the 18th century and almost disappeared. It's not a very aromatic grape but has good volume and freshness, and in this case, the wine was made with grapes from scattered vines from different vineyards averaging 12 years of age. The aim of the white varietal collection is to showcase the character of each grape through a similar vinification and élevage, fermenting them in French oak barrels (but the labels don't mention it anymore) and aging the wines in those barrels with the fine lees that are stirred periodically for five months. It has controlled ripeness and 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.32 and 5.56 grams of acidity. The wines are quite shy when young and tend to show the varietal character with some time in bottle. It has a pale yellow color and is not exuberant but serious and a little shy, with a core of spicy and smoky notes; it has a streamlined palate with great chalkiness, where it is textured, fresh, balanced and sapid. I find it quite expressive. This is quite scarce, with 1,167 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024.

Description
Abel Mendoza Torrontés wine is made from grapes grown in its own 17-hectare vineyard in the Rioja town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The vines come from cuttings planted by Abel Mendoza so that this variety does not become extinct in La Rioja.
The growing soils are mountainous and varied in nature, alternating clay soils, loams and fine sandstones. With Cantabrian influence and a moderate continental climate, this is why the wine is so exquisite!
Winemaking
The grapes for this single varietal were hand harvested from vineyards co-planted with red varietals. Abel Mendoza Torrontés was fermented with wild yeasts and matured in new French oak barrels for 5 months, accompanied by fine lees that were handled to gain mouthfeel.
Taste
Abel Mendoza Torrontés is a creamy, generous and fresh wine. The varietal aromas dominate over the toasted notes of the aging. The palate is sweet and glyceric. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity available to only a few.
Subtle but expressive
It is a more expressive and complete wine than the Abel Mendoza Malvasía, as well as more youthful than the Abel Mendoza Tempranillo Blanco. It is the lowest alcohol white wine in the San Vicente de la Sonsierra winery's white portfolio. It has a lot of volume and fat, but also a lot of freshness.
It is not particularly aromatic, but it is long and expansive, with strong aging potential. Of course, it plays the subtlety card rather than the exuberance card.
And you, have you not yet tasted the exceptional Abel Mendoza Torrontés wine?
