Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2022 Terroir Històric was produced with a blend of 75% Garnacha and 25% Cariñena from nine different villages where the soils are also different—slate, clay, granite and alluvial—from vines of around 20 years of age. The full clusters fermented with natural yeasts, and the wine matured for six months in stainless steel tanks. It's the ripest of the reds from 2022, with 14% alcohol but kept good freshness and a pH of 3.54. It's primary and juicy, young and tender, with fine tannins. Easy to drink. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled between April and May 2023.

Features

Description

Terroir Històric wine is a genuine and passionate expression of Priorat in two colours: white and red. Unlike the specific Terroir al Límit wines, Terroir Històric is dedicated to expressing the complex character of the entire Priorat. While the project, which was launched in 2015, is a remarkable incubator for new plantings from the clay and schist soils of Montsant, it is also a liquid homage that uses the négociant tradition of the past to ensure a sustainable future.
Terroir Històric encourages young farmers to return to the family vineyards in the 9 villages of the region (Bellmunt, Gratallops, El Lloar, Escaladei, Poboleda, Porrera, Torroja, Vilella Alta, Vilella Baixa) around Torroja and also to make the transition from these family vineyards to organic farming. Històric Negre is a blend of the traditional Priorat red varieties Garnacha Tinta (75%) and Cariñena (25%) from vineyards aged between 35 and 50 years old and located at altitudes varying between 350 and 800 metres with predominantly slate, clay, granite and alluvial soils.

Winemaking

The approach in the winery is truly minimalist, harnessing the simple and honest power of excellent fruit. This means hand-harvesting, natural fermentation of whole bunches and resting in stainless steel tanks for six months. No extraction, no oak.

Taste

In Terroir Històric the fresh red fruit aromas of pomegranate and hibiscus, fennel and blackberry are accentuated by salty hints of smoky garrigue. Fine-grained tannins shape the balanced palate, resulting in a juicy wine that invites a second sip. It is wine at its most basic and, at the same time, at its most beautiful. It is Priorat at its purest and most unplugged.
