Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The eponymous red 2022 San Román was produced with a blend of 95% Tinta de Toro and 5% Garnacha and is a serious, dark, full-bodied and generously oaked wine for the Toro drinker. It's powerful and concentrated but keeping the balance and the Mauro elegance. It's quite tannic and will repay patience. It matured in barrel for 22 months. 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2025.

Description
San Román is one of those wines that make you stop for a moment, close your eyes and let yourself go. It is not a simple Tinta de Toro; it is a journey to the essence of this powerful and vibrant region. It is made by San Román Bodegas y Viñedos, a project of the García family, the same people who have given us jewels such as Mauro. Since the 1990s, they have been committed to Toro, and they got it right.
With San Román, we are talking about a wine made from 100% Tinta de Toro, the most robust and authentic version of Tempranillo. The vineyards are located in San Román de Hornija, Villaester and Morales de Toro, on stony, sandy-clay soils that force the vines to struggle, concentrating every drop of flavour in their grapes. They are old vines, some more than 100 years old, which produce fewer bunches but of extraordinary quality. And here, less is more.
Winemaking
For the production of San Román, each cluster is picked by hand, without haste, selecting only the best. The wine is then fermented with indigenous yeasts, respecting its identity as much as possible. Afterwards, the wine is aged for 24 months in French and American oak barrels, 25% new, which add nuances without stealing the limelight from the fruit. The result is a wine that exudes elegance and power in equal parts.
Taste
From the first sip, San Román envelops you with its ripe black fruits: blackberries, plums, even a touch of blueberry. Then come the spices, a hint of liquorice and that subtle hint of cedar and toast, like the aroma of an old library. It is ample, with a mouth-filling texture and polished tannins that give it structure without being aggressive. It finishes long, like a conversation you don't want to end. It is one of those wines that make you look at the glass, smile and think: "this is another league".
