Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Red-fruited and softly spicy, the 2022 Old Vine Series Pofadder offers ample floral expressions with crunchy red fruit aromas that display a pure and fresh expression of Cinsault. Medium to full-bodied and with 14% alcohol, the palate is fresh and mineral driven before a firm tannic grip clamps down, telling me it's much too young right now. With a fine acid backbone, this beauty will continue to shine with elegance and finesse for more than a decade. It's immensely pleasurable and has me craving duck breast. Only 5,000 bottles were produced from 50% whole-cluster Cinsault. Speaking with Eben Sadie, he believes it’s their best Cinsault since 2012.

Features

Description

Sadie Family Pofadder wine comes from the Swartland region, specifically from Riebeeksrivier. This wine is made primarily from the Cinsaut variety, also known in South Africa as Hermityk. This variety, which was central to the production of great red wine blends during the 19th and much of the 20th century, presents challenges both in the vineyard and in the cellar. However, when handled with care and precision, Cinsaut can offer unparalleled rewards.

Winemaking

Cement tanks are filled with whole bunches to about 50%, and then a further 50% are destemmed to obtain some juice and begin fermentation. This fermentation takes about 30 days with the skins, after which the grapes are pressed in an old basket press. The wine is transferred to 28 year old conical oak barrels which do not impart woody flavours. Thanks to the age and saturation of the wood staves, the wine's reaction with oxygen is very slow. The wine matures on its lees for 11 months and is then racked to another concrete tank for an additional month for natural decanting. Two weeks before bottling, 60mg/L of sulphur is added and the wine is bottled.

Taste

Cinsaut is a surprisingly deep-textured and tannic variety, despite being a large berry grape. Pofadder stands out for its delicate red fruit of great purity and linear qualities. Soft oriental spices and earthy aromas are perceptible. Smelling the wine, one senses that it is soft on the palate, but firm tannins are found. This edition presents a more serious style of Cinsaut, with noticeably soft tannins and a more delicate acidity.
