Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Here is an exciting new submission from Roagna. The 2016 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione (with 2,713 bottles made) shows quite a few sides to its character. There is a slightly softer side with ripe fruit that dovetails into a spicy side in which you get a clear whiff of white peppercorn. From there, we venture into earthy aromas with iron ore, rose and dried violet. Lastly, there is crushed stone or granite. All of these various facets emerge over a very clean, long and polished mouthfeel.

Features

Description

Roagna Barolo Rocche Di Castiglione is a wine that comes from the prestigious region of Piedmont in Italy, specifically from the Barolo appellation. This red wine is made exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The vineyard from which these grapes are obtained is located in a 0.5 hectare plot in Rocche di Castiglione Falletto, bordering Pira, with vines between 25 and 50 years old. The soil of this plot is a mixture of marl, sandstone and limestone, which gives the wine its unique characteristics.

Winemaking

Vinification is carried out in large wooden casks for ten days, using a foot of vat with indigenous yeasts. The submerged cap technique is used, which can last between 60 and 75 days. The wine is aged in neutral toasted French oak barrels. The oak used by Luca, the winemaker, is never toasted, but is made using hot steam instead of flame. Normally, the wine is aged for five years in wood before it is released to the market.

Taste

Roagna Barolo Rocche Di Castiglione offers a crisp, linear presentation with crisp forest fruits, crushed stone, rose and liquorice root. In addition, it is highlighted by flavours of macerated cherry, raspberry and plum. These flavours deepen with accents of flowers, earth and wild herbs, culminating in a long, refreshing finish. It is a balanced wine that lingers on the palate.
