Description
In a renovated former agricultural cooperative on the outskirts of Bonastre, in the Baix Penedès, two Italian non-conformists-MassimoMarchiori and Antonella Gerosa-decided tobreak with the conventions of industrialised wine. They left behind their urban lives in Turin to embrace ancestral Catalan viticulture, recovering almost forgotten varieties and rescuing abandoned vineyards, with an almost archaeological sensibility. Thus Partida Creus was born, a project that shuns over-manipulation and seeks the essential, the pure.
Trepat, the protagonist of this cuvée, is a variety native to Catalonia that has historically been used for light rosés and sparkling wines, but in the hands of Partida Creus it takes on another dimension: here it is presented as a red wine of minimal intervention, raw, sincere and absolutely vibrant. Grown in clay-limestone soils poor in organic matter and under a Mediterranean climate of strong sunshine and cool nights, Partida Creus Trepat is a rebellious and electric expression of the terroir.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard. The grapes are gently destemmed to maintain the integrity of the berry, followed by a short maceration of 3 days, seeking a delicate extraction that respects the varietal freshness. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, without temperature control, using only indigenous yeasts. Nothing is added or removed.
Partida Creus Trepat remains in these same tanks for 8 months of ageing, in contact with its fine lees, without battonage or artifice. Afterwards, it is bottled unclarified, unfiltered and without added sulphur, to rest for a further 5 months in the bottle before being released onto the market.
Taste
Partida Creus Trepat is a caress of tart red fruits - pomegranate, blueberry, wild cherry - but far from the usual sweetness. Here there is rusticity and tension. A wine that smells of the forest after the rain: there are dry leaves, damp earth, a touch of white pepper and the subtle trace of graphite.
On the palate, Partida Creus Trepat is light but nervous, like a long-distance runner who keeps his strength in his stride. The Trepat's natural acidity sets the pace: lively, precise, uncompromising. The tannin is barely perceptible, dusty, accompanying with discretion. There are notes of rhubarb, dried orange peel, a balsamic echo of thyme and a final salinity that anchors it in its coastal land.
