Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The toasty 2020 Syrah Pago Florentino has balsamic aromas, a minty touch and some herbal undertones intermixed with very ripe black fruit. It's juicy and full-bodied, round and lush, a warm-climate Syrah. 2,000 bottles were filled in March 2021 after eight months in barrel.

Features

Description

There are wines that transport you, that at the first sip tell stories of the land where they were born. Pago Florentino is one of them. A wine that not only speaks of its origin in Ciudad Real, but also expresses it with character and elegance.
Behind it is the Arzuaga winery, a name that resonates strongly in the world of wine, especially for its legacy in Ribera del Duero. But here, at the La Solana estate, they have achieved something unique: to give absolute prominence to Cencibel, the local Tempranillo variety. This wine is a pure reflection of the warmth of La Mancha's climate, with vineyards planted in poor, stony soils that force the vines to work hard, resulting in small, concentrated grapes full of intensity.

Winemaking

It is not only the soil, but also the way it is worked. The grapes are harvested by hand, respecting each cluster as much as possible. Then, fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks, allowing to extract all its aromatic potential. But the magic happens in the ageing process: 12 months in French and American oak barrels. It is there that the wine develops those enveloping notes that make it so special.
If Pago Florentino had to be described in one image, it would be that of a summer sunset: deep, warm and full of nuances. The colour is cherry red, with reflections reminiscent of ripe cherries. On the nose, a parade of aromas: red fruit, toasty touches, a hint of vanilla and a whisper of cocoa.
But the best comes on the palate. Smooth at first, with round, well-integrated tannins, but with an imposing structure that unfolds with every sip. It is one of those wines that stays with you, leaving a long aftertaste, where those notes of black fruit and spices reappear.
Pago Florentino asks to be enjoyed unhurriedly, with a good conversation or a dish that does it justice: a game stew, a cured cheese or simply a piece of bread with olive oil. Because, in the end, the best thing about wine is to share it.
