Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The spicy and smoky 2023 Terlegiz, which means 'bee sanctuary' in the Basque language, was produced with a blend of grapes—Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia, Hondarribi Zuri, Izkiriota Txikia and Izkiriota Handia—from one of the oldest vineyards in the zone, co-planted with those varieties (and probably more) on sandy limestone soils (but also with slate!), which give the wine a chalky texture and a sapid finish. It has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.3 and comes through as creamy, spicy and still a little oaky. The full clusters were pressed and the juice fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in 600-liter barrels and Austrian oak foudres for six to seven months. 4,100 bottles produced. it was bottled in May 2024.

Features

Description

Marko Terlegiz 's story is also that of a return to a forgotten and complex land. Oxer Bastegieta, obsessed by the extreme landscapes of the Basque Country, wanted to pay tribute to one of the oldest vineyards in the area, where varieties such as Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia, Hondarribi Zuri, Izkiriota Txikia and Izkiriota Handia coexist in co-plantation. "Terlegiz" - bee sanctuary in Basque - reflects the absolute respect for biodiversity and the life that pulsates among the vines. The vineyard sits on calcareous sandy soils with slate, giving the wine a distinctive tension and texture. In a vintage marked by unstable weather, Oxer chose to hand harvest and reject compromised grapes, prioritising quality over yield.

Winemaking

The grapes destined for Marko Terlegiz are pressed in whole bunches, which allows the purest and most delicate must to be extracted. Fermentation starts spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, without the addition of oenological products or corrections. Marko Terlegiz is aged for 6 to 7 months in 600-litre barrels and Austrian oak foudres, always on its fine lees, which adds volume and depth without losing tension. No aggressive filtering or technical stabilisation: it is bottled in May as it evolves in the cellar. Only 4,100 bottles are produced, reflecting its artisanal and limited character.

Taste

Marko Terlegiz does not come on shyly: it shows a creamy texture and incisive acidity. On the nose, there are smoky and spicy notes, a background of grapefruit, lime, lemon zest and an echo of wet rock and salt. The palate is tense, with a firm passage, where a marked salinity, a fine bitterness (green almond type) and a slight elegant oxidative touch stand out. The oak ageing adds structure, not prominence, leaving a persistent, dry and mineral finish, with echoes of apple skin, dried flowers and white spices.

A Basque white wine without concessions, which looks more to the Juraor to certain Atlantic whites than to the classic txakolí. For those who seek excitement in texture rather than fruit.
