Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2019 Ganko is a village wine from old vines in Cárdenas, 90% Garnacha and 10% Mazuelo (Cariñena), with 14.5% alcohol and the ripeness of the vintage. The grapes were picked and fermented together with 20% full clusters, and the wine matured in 600-liter oak barrels for 12 months and a further 16 months in oak foudre. I liked it very much. I found it clean, precise and balanced, a little shy on the nose but beautifully textured, with a dry, long and chalky finish. This has had a longer élevage than in the past, and that helps stabilize the wine and makes it more complex and stable. This is deeper and more complex than the initial vintages of this wine, more serious. The vines are now handled by Rivière, and he says he notices it in the wines. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2022.

Features

Description

Ganko is a red blend, an exceptional wine among the Rivière winery's products, blending two very distinguished grapes from La Rioja, at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Its name means "Obstinate or stubborn" in Japanese, and it was one of the first presentations made by Olivier in 2011.
This vintage stands out for being the result of a traditional vinification, an originality that you cannot deny to your palate. It is exquisite!

Winemaking

In order to obtain the excellence of this wine, 80% Garnacha and 20% Mazuelo have been used. It is made from 60-80 year old vines and its soils are sandy.
Vinification is carried out with whole bunches and natural yeasts are applied in order not to alter its essence. Thus, both the Mazuelo and the Garnacha are fermented separately in tanks of up to 3,000 litres, macerated for 30 days and aged for up to 18 months in French oak barrels.

Taste

Olivier Rivière's Ganko is a fresh wine, loaded with mineral notes, an excellent aromatic evolution, which will catch you the more you oxygenate it in the glass. On the palate it is fruity, with mineral and wild notes and a long, well-balanced finish- a liquid frenzy!

Original Coupague with good acidity

Due to its peculiarities both on the estate and in the cellar, this red wine has a unique profile; it goes well with appetizers, tapas and with red and white meats. It is a marvel of viticulture, as it is silky and long on the palate, with the right amount of salt and bitterness, it is not heavy, but flowing. A wonderful wine!
