Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The characterful 2018 Mengoba las Tinajas fermented and macerated with the skins for 10 months in clay tinajas (amphorae), but the skin contact, despite being long, doesn't feel exaggerated—the wine comes through as quite harmonious and subtler than the majority of orange wines. It has notes of apricot and marmalade and a dry and serious palate, beautifully textured with some fine-grained tannins and a dry, long and tasty finish. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. It's sold without appellation of origin, as it doesn't really show the expected typicity of the whites from the appellation. 1,100 bottles were filled in November 2020 after one year in tinaja, 10 of those months with the skins.

Features

Description

Mengoba Las Tinajas is a white wine made from 100% Godello grapes by Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba in Castilla y León, Spain.
The grapes used in this wine come from small Godello plots with an average age of approximately 70 years located in the villages of Espanillo and Quilos. The soil composition is varied, stony in Quilos and slatey in Espanillo.

Elaboration

The grapes are harvested by hand. When the selected grapes arrive at the winery, they are destemmed and placed in earthenware jars. A skin maceration (with skins, at low temperature) is carried out for approximately 120 days before pressing and separating the wine and skins.
The wine is aged for 6 months in earthenware jars. Afterwards, it is bottled directly from the vat, without fining or filtering.

Taste

It is a harmonious, subtle wine with fruity aromas. The palate is full-bodied, with good texture and fine-grained tannins and a dry, long, flavoursome finish.

A white wine full of complexity
