Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

I also tasted the 2023 La Escribana, the unfortified white from Macharnudo from grapes picked early and fermented at low temperature in stainless steel vats. It matured in used Sherry butts for 12 months under a veil of flor yeast. It has 13.5% alcohol and 5.82 grams of acidity. There's tension, texture and volume, but the wine is fresher and more elegant than the 2023; it feels cooler, a little shy but with insinuating finesse and complexity. It's one of the most powerful plots within Macharnudo, but it still has a little more clay than San Cayetano. This is brilliant. 13,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024.

Features

Description

Luis Pérez La Escribana is a unique expression of Spanish viticulture and oenology. Produced by Bodegas Luis Pérez, this wine stands out for its varietal purity, being made from 100% Palomino Fino grapes. The grapes come from old vines grown in Tosca de Barajuelas soils, located in Cerro del Obispo, a region with a rich viticultural heritage.
The La Escribana grapes are harvested in August, using a meticulous process of selection and manual harvesting in small boxes to preserve the integrity of the bunches. This care is extended to a first green harvest, which aims to reduce production and obtain a wine with low alcohol content and high acidity, key elements for the final balance of the product.

Winemaking

The production of La Escribana involves fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature, followed by 12 months of biological ageing on its lees in sherry casks. This process gives the wine distinctive characteristics and a complexity that make it stand out.

Taste

La Escribana is the result of a combination of factors: the quality of the Palomino Fino grape, the unique terroir of the region, and the careful winemaking and ageing process. This wine is characterised by its aromatic profile and texture, offering a taste experience that reflects the authenticity and tradition of the Jerez region. The ageing under the veil brings unique nuances, resulting in a wine that is both refreshing and complex, ideal for connoisseurs and wine lovers looking for a unique sensory experience.
